Lenton Brae In Good Hands Sangiovese Rose 2024

EXCLUSIVE PRE-RELEASE not yet released anywhere else, we tried it at the Boutique Wine Show (before the Trophy was announced) and immediately knew we just HAVE to have this in our launch box. We made a few calls and managed to source an exclusive pre-release!

TROPHY BEST ROSE - 2024 My Vintner WA Boutique and Single Vineyard Wine Show

This Rose is delicious, generous yet delicate, dry in style with juicy fruit. This one will pair with almost any dish that’s light and fresh this summer. Sangiovese is a variety we don’t see often enough here, and these grapes were grown in a manner specifically for this style of Rose.

Oh yes, we have something here if you are looking for a modern style of Aussie rose. It makes sense that this Tuscan variety is use with its spicy savoury elements idea for rose. No oak has been used, so it’s pure and pristine with a brightness and life. The rose petal and cherry notes are brilliantly appealing with the savoury dry finish clean and long.

Aravina Estate Arinto 2024

LIMITED STOCKS of this wine, with such small production each year, stocks are extremely limited. This wine stood out at the Boutique Wine Show, with a delightful citrus and saline intensity that will match extremely well with seafood, even with a little heat or spice, my mind goes to a fresh Thai style salad, with grilled dhufish.

Arinto is a Portuguese white wine variety, quite RARE here in Australia, let alone Western Australia, with only 2 known plantings, one at Aravina and another at the Olive Farm in Swan. Aravina’s vineyard was established in 1986 as the well-known Amberley Estate and became famous for its Chenin Blanc.

Needing to know more about this rarity, we visited Ryan, Aravina’s Winemaker, he tells me how proud he is to work with this vineyard, and that the Arinto production is only a few barrels, so typically sells out via their Cellar Door and Restaurant. Well Ryan you should be proud as punch, this wine is very unique!

This Iberian Peninsula variety is a bit of a rarity in Australia. It's given some impressive treatment including whole bunch pressing to stainless steel and then time on lees to bring definition and richness to the palate. Captures the textural feel of this variety with its slightly nutty saline characters providing quite a lift.

Hamelin Bay Chardonnay 2023

Another great find at the Boutique Wine Show, thinking it would likely be a higher priced chardonnay, after researching we are delighted with this excellent value! When gems like this pop up, we get a little excited. Great value, delicious and drinking well now.

The 2023 vintage is quickly becoming renowned for excellent Chardonnay, and this is no exception, with several GOLD MEDALS under its belt already.

A few days after we tasted this wine, Hamelin Bay took out the BEST CHARDONNAY and WHITE WINE OF SHOW TROPHY with this, along with a stack of others, including MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITOR.

Then just before publishing, they also won BEST CHARDONNAY and WHITE WIN OF SHOW at the 2024 Australia and New Zealand Boutique Wine Awards!

The tally now, is FOUR TROPHIES, plus multiple GOLD and SILVER medals.

A lighter bodied delicate chardonnay from this southern part of Margaret River. Yet the intensity and lingering fruit qualities are clearly evident. Bright citrus and nashi pear on the nose with just a hint of lightly roasted cashew. The palate comes to life with a minerally sea shell acidity. Neat little wine for the shorter term.

Aravina Grenache 2023

While visiting Ryan, we asked about his Grenache, as had tasted (and loved) it at the show where it had received a GOLD MEDAL.

Later it went on to win not just one, but THREE TROPHIES… RED WINE OF SHOW, BEST SINGLE VARIETY RED WINE and the clincher WINE OF THE SHOW.

Best on ground is no mean feat and while Ryan is chuffed with the 2023, he offered a tank sample of the 2024, and wow! It is not yet bottled, so we will come back to that later.

Being from a small 3.5-hectare warm site with free draining soils, these vines need to work that little bit harder.  Superb fruit vibrancy, rich yet elegant showing berry galore, plums and spice. Such a perfect little summer red and can even be chilled slightly before serving. Maybe alongside a dark chocolate, black forest trifle.

A light to medium-bodied example of a variety that continues to grow in popularity. This has a firmish thread of chalky tannins and a slightly ironstone ferrous edge. It’s generous with a wild mix of berry fruit characters and a liberal sprinkle of spices providing a lift.

Hamelin Bay Shiraz 2023

PRE-RELEASE EXCLUSIVE not yet released by winemakers, but we asked very nicely and secured a small amount for our launch!

Again tasted at the Boutique Wine Show where it shone and received a GOLD MEDAL. Hamelin Bay did extremely well at this show and won the TROPHY for MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITOR.

Dark fruit palate with plum, blackberries and mulberries, taking you back to the mulberry tree fights as a child. Medium body with rich and intense flavours, ripe, but not overly sweet fruit and a lovely euro style savouriness.

Ray Jordan hasn’t yet tasted/published the 2023 review. The 2022 vintage received 94 points.

Last but certainly not least...

McHenry Hohnen Hazel’s Vineyard Syrah 2023

EXCLUSIVE PRE-RELEASE another wine not yet released by the winemakers, and for a good reason. This wine is for cellaring, hide it from the visiting family and sticker it with ‘Drink 2027 or later’. Patience and restraint will reward.

We were graced with a small quantity to offer you, and after winning the TROPHY for BEST SHIRAZ / SYRAH at the Endeavour Group 2024 Margaret River Wine Show, this wine will be in extremely high demand.

A Shiraz, as we know it to be called, yet is labelled Syrah, for the style it is made in. That is a European/French style; earthy, elegant, and savoury, rather than our big bold Aussie Shiraz.

Their southernmost vineyard, Hazel’s Vineyard, is biodynamically farmed and vines grow on coarse lateritic soils with a northerly aspect, which assists ripening. One of my favourite chardonnays comes from their nearby Calgardup vineyard, yet Hazel’s is further inland from the coast, waiting that little longer for cooling afternoon breezes.

Enjoy all these with good friends and great food - Bel

The Western Australian Boutique and Single Vineyard Wine Show is run by the Blackwood Valley Wine Association. For over 20 years, this annual wine show has been conducted to showcase not only the wines from the local regions, but also from boutique producers across the whole state. Run by passionate volunteers it showcases very small and single vineyard producers.

In their terms a small producer, is a winemaker who crushes less than 250 tonnes a year. So, to give you an idea, at a maximum a winemaker crushing 250 tonnes would make approximately 13,000 dozen. Although typically, these winemakers have much smaller volumes.

A single vineyard wine is made from 100% fruit purely sourced from one single vineyard; these wines are unique in their provenance.
